Changes to my study programme

To start, it is important to point out that the career that I am currently studying is architecture and it is well known how controversial this career has been in terms of student load, also below I will mention the changes I would make from my own experience…

Firstly, something I would like to change about the curriculum. It would be to give more attention and study hours to history subjects, and at the same time to oriental architecture. Although I am only in my second year, in the theoretical courses I have taken I have not learned much about Asian architecture, of which it is well known that there are great exponents (including Pritzker winners) and a tradition as a really influential culture. While these topics can be seen later and optionally, I think it should be part of the initial training of an architect, because currently we are only having a very strong Western vision and led mainly by the European view.

Secondly, I think the duration of this career is fine, however the study load is too heavy. It is very good that they push us to give our maximum and that they want to form great professionals who know everything about architecture. But it is too forced, from my personal experience I have had a lot of workload in all semesters and I have had to leave my personal life aside a lot, in order to focus on passing my courses. And I know it's not just me, because I have shared experiences with other classmates who are in the same situation, and I have also shared experiences with other friends in other careers and universities.  I think this happens because of the teaching method, it is in the theoretical branches where they try to pass a lot of information, and it is the jobs and tasks that they leave for us to do in our free time. The same happens with the workshop when we are given an assignment or we have corrections in class hours, but almost all the work is left for us to do in our free time, being that the real work in class is very scarce. Since all of this is done at the same time, we have to sacrifice a lot of our time, even more so if there are students who work and study at the same time.

Thirdly, I like the facilities of the faculty, it is understood that it is an old university with history, and the classrooms are large and spacious. But I would like technology to be implemented even more, currently architects work almost 100% from software on computers to project their ideas, making the model is left behind. So they should focus more on this area of technology, because it is the students who will be architects in the future and they will need these tools. It should also be taken into account that not everyone can afford a good computer and it would be good that the university also facilitates even more than it already does, the use of technology when learning.

In conclusion, there are many changes I would make, considering my short experience studying architecture, but I hope they are changes that promote better teaching and experience at the university.
